Part 2 - The Bedroom Exercise
For this task, I had to make a child’s room look like it belonged to a bitter old man. This was probably my favourite perspective exercise I did in terms of creating a story through a piece of art. For this piece, I wanted to portray the old man as having dementia, hence why the room looks almost exactly the same as the child’s room in the old man’s memory, except with more ‘wear and tear’ and inaccuracies as he can no longer remember, reflecting the mental state of this man.
The room shows he’s stuck in the past, but shows his confusion and unhappiness through his scribbled out and ripped up photos on his bookcase which is falling apart.
I also wanted to add some morbid mystery to the scene, for example, I added a hand in the bottom left hand corner.
There is also mystery in this image: why is there a hand on the ground? Why are the photos all ripped? Who lives here? I added these elements to really illustrate the tone and mystery of this scene, but also to make it seem like there was/is somebody still living here.
It is a very dark topic to discuss but I feel like anything can be addressed as long as it is with delicacy and lots of research into it. I also have experience with someone who has dementia.
Overall, I think this piece was my most successful perspective drawing I did.
