Sandie Character Sketches

“What’s Behind the Door”

“Victorian Ghost Girl” - Final Character Design

Sandie character/animation sheet progress

First, I started by doing a rough sketch of my character in pencil to get a feel for her anatomy and what details I did and didn’t want to include.

Next, I went over the rough sketches in pen. I decided to give the character a button eye, a Lolita/Victoria style frilly dress, and a hat to fit her doll motif. She has long curly hair that is akin to smoke (as she died in a fire) and her design represents how - despite her dying in her 20s - she still looks very youthful and innocent.

This is the final version of the turnaround sheet.

Sandie shape language

Sandie (to show her young/innocent demeanour) is made up of many round shapes. Her body is a pear shape, with big fluffy curly hair that goes down to her feet. Unfortunately, I slightly overcomplicated her design with clutter, making it hard to focus on her main design.

Sandie Expressions

I wanted to exaggerate Sandie’s emotions and expressions due to her very cartoony aesthetic and show how emotionally unstable she appears. The only thing I will say I regret not doing is exaggerating Sandie’s hair when she’s sad and angry (making it foggier or even akin to flames when mad or droopy when she’s unhappy, much like how Pinkie Pie’s hair changes)

In my pencil version of the expressions, I wanted to show how Sandie’s hair also had a mind of its own, but it didn’t look quite right, so I decided against it.

Sandie character poses

The illustration on the left showcases a bored Sandie using her hair to hang against the ceiling. This was to not only emphasise how long Sandie has been trapped in this room for but also how her hair has a mind of its own (akin to Entrapta’s or Poppy’s from the Trolls franchise)

On the other hand, the drawing on the right has Sandie holding a bunny ragdoll with a bittersweet feeling.
It shows a softer and more content side of Sandie's character, especially compared to her previous expressions.

Despite her childlike personality and appearance, Sandie is shown not to have much energy, mostly sitting around on any surface. She seems to be a rather bitter ghost.

Sandie’s demeanour changes a lot when she has company, becoming more bubbly and excitable. Her hair also emphasises this side of her, becoming a lot softer.
She will use her hair as an extra pair of hands whenever she is occupied or does not feel comfortable touching certain surfaces.
For example, she is shown using her hair to pour tea as she is terrified of anything hot, especially as it relates to the way she perished. Ironically enough, she does love warm tea.

Extra Horror Design I made of Sandie inspired by Coraline’s ‘Other Mother’ and the princess from ‘Slay the Princess’. This version of Sandie will only appear if you have done everything you can to irritate or anger the spirit constantly. This version of her design is also more akin to what she looked like when she was still alive (just less creepy and skeletal).
